Support for the Lib Dems is growing as Council is “failing”

Many polls continue to show a huge increase in support for the Liberal Democrats following Nick Clegg’s appearance on the first televised debate. Some polls have suggested that the Lib Dems are actually now in first place, and that approval for Nick Clegg is at a similar level to Winston Churchill and Tony Blair at the height of their popularity.

There is at last a chance to move away from traditional two party politics and people are recognising that the country needs real change.

Locally, there was yesterday a highly critical report published into the way the Council goes about its business and the Government is to intervene to take control. You can view the report here.

The Lib Dems are the party that can help locally. More councillors and a Lib Dem MP will offer Doncaster change from the old ways and not let politics get in the way of doing the job, which is quite simply representing the people who voted for you and working for Doncaster, not yourself.

Patrick Wilson also offers support for ‘Vote Cruelty Free’

Liberal Democrat candidate, Patrick Wilson, has pledged his support for Vote Cruelty Free, a new non-partisan coalition of animal protection organisations working to put animals on the political agenda. Patrick is the first candidate in Doncaster to pledge to Vote Cruelty Free.

Patrick Wilson said, “Supporting Vote Cruelty Free is an opportunity too good to miss. On a daily basis all animals face a wide range of issues and threats to their very existence in the main from the activities that we as humans undertake. It is therefore imperative that something is done to alleviate their suffering and ultimately protect all animals. I am more than happy to add my weight and support behind this campaign.”

A Vote Cruelty Free spokesperson said, “Animal protection is an issue close to the UK public’s heart but this is often not reflected in current political debate. It is fantastic that Patrick Wilson has shown he believes in animal protection issues as much as his potential future constituents in Doncaster Central; we are calling on all candidates to follow his lead by pledging their support for Vote Cruelty Free.”

Patrick Wilson pledges support to mental health charity

“Mental health has been the Cinderella service of the NHS for far too long. That’s why I’m pleased to be supporting the Rethink pledge, and backing their election campaign. Meeting local service users and carers was a real eye-opener, and I learnt a great deal about the stigma people with mental illness experience on a regular basis. This must be challenged at every level of society.”

Getting on with it

Whilst the faintly ridiculous waiting game for the election to be called goes on, Doncaster Lib Dems were getting on with it last weekend. Edwin Simpson, candidate for Don Valley, is pictured ready to meet the people of Doncaster. Members from all wards and constituencies were out in force and as always it was refreshing to be out doing what Lib Dems do best: meeting the people and discussing local issues that matter to them.

Ed Sanderson chosen for Doncaster North

Ed was born in Leeds, and has been an active member of the Liberal Democrats since 2003. He studied Politics at Warwick University, before continuing his studies at the College of Law in York.
Ed is proud to be a member of the Liberal Democrats because of its multilateral foreign policy, its committed attitude to environmental issues and to social justice, and its support of electoral reform. He is excited about spreading Lib Dem values to the constituents of Doncaster North, and campaigning hard on their behalf.
Outside of politics, Ed is a keen rambler and tennis player, and takes an interest in local history and world cinema.

Profile: Edwin Simpson

Edwin Simpson has lived in Don Valley for 44 years. He is the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for the constituency.

He has been a councillor for many years, during which time he championed the campaign that exposed the Donnygate scandal.

Edwin has played a leading role in pushing forward the environmental agenda. He persuaded Doncaster Council to promote renewable-energy production schemes in new housing and industrial estates.

He believes we must mitigate the effects of climate change. Doncaster will be at risk of further severe flooding if we don’t act to protect our environment.

Edwin is educated to Higher National Certificate in mechanical engineering. He also studied civil engineering before specialising in materials handling, principally in the coal mining industry, whilst employed as a project engineer. With the decline of the mining industry, Edwin decided to go it alone and is now self-employed.
